$3.5 Million Penthouse At London’s Canary Wharf Keeps The River Close

Canary Wharf on the River Thames is one of London’s most coveted neighborhoods. The once bustling shipping wharf has been the city’s financial center and a popular place to live for more than three decades. Living here is all about having sweeping river views and an exclusive lifestyle.

The two-story penthouse for sale in the area’s Pierpoint Building doubles down on both. The residence on the ninth and 10th floors at 16 Westferry Road offers unobstructed west-facing views of the river.

The penthouse’s roughly 6,700 square feet is almost evenly divided between indoor and outdoor space. “The unique feature of this penthouse apartment is the combination of living and entertaining space,” says listing agent Warren McCann of Chestertons.

Space and natural light define the home on both levels. The ninth floor contains a large bay window with floor-to-ceiling glass in the living room and dining area. The living room also has a fireplace and natural wood built-in drawers and shelves that frame it on either side. The primary bedroom, with an ensuite bathroom and dressing room, two more bedrooms, an office and kitchen also are located on the lower floor.

The 10th floor features a sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides that open out to one of the largest roof-top terraces in Canary Wharf, McCann says. Views of the river and the city abound from this urban retreat. A private hot tub and sauna also are on the terrace.

The Pierpoint Building is located in a gated community with a 24-hour concierge, communal gardens and a gym. The penthouse comes with two parking spaces and easy access to the city by London Underground (Jubilee and Elizabeth lines), train, boat and air (City Airport).

Canary Wharf was part of the docklands that made London rich. Transport and trade in the area were vital, particularly since the 18th century. In 1937, Canary Wharf gained its name from a company that imported bananas from the Canary Islands.

After the docks closed in the 1980s, the riverfront area was reimagined. High-rise buildings sprang up as financial offices and towering hotels. Five of the tallest buildings in the United Kingdom are located in Canary Wharf.

The Pierpoint was designed by the innovative urban firm CZWG Architects and built by Ballymore Properties around the turn of the 21st century. The neighborhood has become synonymous with a thoroughly contemporary lifestyle with shops, restaurants and entertainment venues within walking distance.

The penthouse costs GBP 3.3 million (US $3.49 million).
