Workers are dobbing in more employers than ever, and the Fair Work Ombudsman is chasing $453m

Small Business

The Fair Work Ombudsman received a record 31,596 anonymous tip-offs in 2025-26, up 23% from 25,608 the year before, according to its latest annual report.

The regulator recovered $453 million in unpaid wages and entitlements for more than 181,000 workers, a 27% jump. It also lifted proactive investigations by 86% to more than 2,680.

Hospitality and construction stayed in focus. Fast food, restaurants and cafes saw $5.6 million recovered for 3,538 workers and 16 legal proceedings, while construction saw $6.8 million recovered for 932 workers and 14 proceedings. Across all industries there were 60 court cases, $2.3 million in court-ordered penalties and 791 infringement notices worth $831,891.

Small business groups say the rules are getting harder to follow, with more than 40 major Fair Work Act changes since 2022. The restaurant industry body suggested some tip-offs may come from businesses reporting competitors. It is unclear how many tips involved small businesses or led to investigations.

What it means for your money

If you employ staff, check your award rates, payslips and records now, because complaints are rising. If you are an employee, check your pay against your award; unpaid wages can be recovered.
