This holiday season, there’s something to look forward to seeing in the sky aside from a red-nosed reindeer pulling a sleigh. On December 21, Jupiter and Saturn will form a rare alignment creating what looks like a double planet. This celestial event on the winter solstice will form a so-called Christmas Star.
What makes this year’s spectacle so rare? According to NASA, it’s been nearly 400 years since the planets passed this close to each other in the sky, and nearly 800 years since the alignment of Saturn and Jupiter occurred at night, as it will for 2020, allowing nearly everyone around the world to witness this “great conjunction.”
In the spirit of this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, here’s a selection of homes in locations that are perfect for soaking in some of the best celestial views on Earth. These communities offer iconic nearby national parks, natural areas and the opportunity to take in the wonder of the starry night sky.
