House Hunting: $14-Million Homes In Three Wealthy Coastal Markets

Real Estate

Without a doubt, no housing markets feel more of a pull than those on the coast. From fair weather to fresh breezes to breathtaking views, coastal properties continue to be some of the most sought after, particularly in western hotspots such as Southern California and Hawaii. In this week’s real estate price comparison, I took a look at how much about $14 million would buy in three coastal markets tied to the Pacific.

From a Polynesian-inspired home in Kauai to a Mediterranean-style spread in Beverly Hills, here’s a closer look:

Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California

Hilton Found behind gates in Bowmont Estates, a small Beverly Hills enclave of large-lot properties, this Mediterranean-style crowns an acre-plus hilltop, putting it in the perfect position for enjoying sweeping city-to-ocean views. In fact, nearly every room of the house has some view, including a primary bedroom suite with a sweeping balcony perfect for taking in the sunset.

Features: The seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom floorplan kicks off with a grand two-story foyer that opens to large formal areas. Among the common rooms is a main-level chef’s kitchen with ample seating, a dining room and a living room with pocketing doors that open to the grounds. An auxiliary wing is largely devoted to entertaining and holds a home theater, a bar, a tasting room and a glass-enclosed wine cellar.

Other perks: The double-gated grounds were enhanced for entertaining and hold an outdoor kitchen, a dining pavilion, lawn and a wrap-around infinity-edge swimming pool and spa. A guesthouse with a kitchenette and gym provides additional flexible space.

Kilauea, Hawai’i

Overlooking the waters of Anini Lagoon on the North Shore of Kauai, this Polynesian-inspired estate is defined by its incredible custom woodworking, green ceramic-tile roof and 240 feet of beach frontage. Called Wailana Malie or “quiet waters” after Anini Lagoon, the single-story home of more than 3,100 square feet was designed by Anderson Collier Architects and built by premier Kauai homebuilder R.S. Weir.

Features: From the thatched bamboo ceiling to the Balinese-inspired entry doors, the four-bedroom, five-bathroom home is full of custom details. In the open-concept kitchen areas, there are custom-built hardwood cabinetry and an island/buffet. Sliding glass doors on either side of the common area open directly to wrap-around Ipe decking.

Other perks: Natural wonders are on display from every direction and include Anini Reef, Kilauea Lighthouse and the idyllic little island of Moku’ae’ae. The one-acre property also has a koi pond/waterfall entry, tropical landscaping, a separate guesthouse and a freestanding art studio.
