Glacier-Surrounded Hunting Lodge Carries On A 100-Year Tradition In New Zealand

Real Estate

Imagine what it would be like to own a secluded hunting lodge in New Zealand’s Southern Alps surrounded by glacier-covered mountains, expansive rivers and rugged bushland.

Now, consider the real possibility of it. A sizable slice of the South Island, developed over more than two decades by one family, has become available as an investment and business opportunity for the adventure-minded.

Set in a prime hunting location, Manuka Point Station has attracted a worldwide clientele. Big game species include Himalayan tahr, a type of wild goat; chamois, a goat-antelope bovine; and wapiti deer. Red stags, elk and wild boar are abundant.

But the appeals of the site go beyond its 100-year trophy hunting tradition. Guests can enjoy heli-skiing, jet boating, fishing, hiking or simply relaxing and taking in the scenery.

At the heart of the property is the wood-clad 400-square-meter (about 4,300-square-foot) lodge. A central lounge with a fireplace serves as a communal space to plan the next day’s outing. Windows bring in mountain views. Sliding glass doors open to patio space.

The center island kitchen opens to the dining room. All guest accommodations are ensuite.

The lodge can be reached by four-wheel drive or air. There are three landing strips on the more than 10,000-hectare (25,000-acre) site. A bush plane provides an easy way to explore the pristine wilderness from above or make a day trip to Queenstown to shop. Christchurch, the largest city on South Island, is a quick flight away by helicopter.

Glacier-fed springs supply the property, which could be developed into an eco-lodge. Other possibilities include returning the site to a Merino sheep and beef ranch. Rights to an additional 12,000 hectares (nearly 30,000 acres) can be secured through an agreement with local authorities.

The town of Methven, which serves as a ski base and hosts an annual rodeo, is 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Ashburton and 95 kilometers (59 miles) from coastal Christchurch.
