The penthouse at New York’s 91 Central Park West began with a famous owner—newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst—and now it continues it streak of high-profile residents with fashion designer Giorgio Armani who purchased the four bedroom unit last month for $17.5 million. This is a slight shave off its previous asking price of $17.995 million (after originally asking $22 million almost two years ago). Armani, who was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award just last week at the Fashion Awards in London (pictured above), had reportedly been in talks to purchase the unit a few years ago since he owns a unit on the same floor and was going to create a full floor unit. The sale didn’t proceed and instead T-Mobile CEO John Legere became the owner in 2015.
During Legere’s tenure there he oversaw an extensive renovation in conjunction with architectural design firm SheltonMindel to upgrade the interiors while still retaining it 1920s feel. The above living room has the original leaded and stained glass arched windows, wood beams and carved fireplace mantle that graced the home when it was built.
Above is another preserved piece of history, the bar where rumor has it Hearst’s secret girlfriend, Ziegfeld Follies chorus girl Marion Davies, carved her initials that are still visible in the woodwork.
The bedroom with park views still has the decorative molding adorning the arches. Below is an example of how a modern kitchen can blend in with the 100-year old design features without seeming out of place.
The listing was last held with Heather McDonough Domi and Henry Hershkowitz both of Compass.
