English Manor House Enjoys A Country In The City Setting In Toronto

Real Estate

An English manor house for sale in Toronto stands as a testament to enduring design and first-rate craftsmanship.

While retaining its steep multigabled roof, stone window heads and quoin stone corner accents, the century-old house has undergone interior updates and renovations as the surrounding Forest Hill neighborhood has blossomed. The low-density community of single-family homes is characterized by a mix of distinct architectural styles, well-maintained landscaping and large yards.

“Forest Hill is one of the city of Toronto’s most affluent neighborhoods with some of Ontario’s most sought-after private schools within its boundaries,” says listing agent Tyler Cohen of Barry Cohen Homes. “The area attracts families with children and working professionals who want to be in proximity to the downtown core but still want homes with oversized lots.”

The three-story brick home at 253 Dunvegan Road is on what Cohen calls one of Forest Hill’s most coveted residential blocks. Although the property is in move-in condition, he says, it has been attracting “primarily families looking to renovate or build their dream homes due to the 70-by-175-foot lot.” Lush gardens lend the house a country-in-the-city feeling.

Attention to detail is evident from the stone-floored foyer, which features a wooden front door, three-quarter paneling and crown molding. A French door opens to the main hall with oak hardwood flooring, a double coat closet and beamed ceiling.

Off the hall are several well-proportioned principal rooms including a living room with leaded glass windows, library with an open-hearth fireplace and beamed-ceiling dining room.

A bay of tall windows and skylights bring sun into the breakfast area and center island kitchen. A leaded glass door connects to the family room.

The main staircase leads to a second-floor landing that accesses a primary suite with dual dressing rooms and two ensuite bedrooms. The top floor contains two more bedrooms, a bathroom and a lounge.

A games room, rec room, sauna, storage and ensuite bedroom are on the lower level for a total of six bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

Forest Hill Village shops and restaurants are a four-minute drive from the property. The commute to downtown is about 20 minutes.

Notable landmarks rich in history include the art deco Eglinton Theatre, the Gothic revival-style Timothy Eaton Memorial Church and the 1912 Grace Church on-the-Hill—a central setting in the John Irving novel, A Prayer for Owen Meany.

Barry Cohen and Tyler Cohen of Barry Cohen Homes are the listing agents. The asking price is CA $8.995 million or about US $6.7 million.
