We now find ourselves in the midst of a major pet-adoption boom here in the U.S, and as travelers continue to bookmark and plan for their post-pandemic getaway, ‘pet-friendly’ accommodations have become more of a priority than ever.

According to recently released data by the home-sharing site AirBnb, searches utilizing the ‘allows pets’ filter has increased 65% since January 2021 compared to the same time period last year. To help inspire future travel plans, Airbnb has since teamed up with Dr. Kate Bruce, a Brisbane, Australia-based veterinarian to share some helpful tips for travelers and their pets based on the most wish-listed, pet-friendly stays available on Airbnb. 

For travelers eager to plan your next pet-friendly getaway, from an 18th century farmhouse in Puglia, Italy to a Cycladic-style cave home in Oia, Greece and a cozy palace in Marrakech, Morocco, here’s a look at Airbnb’s top wish-listed homes along with vet-approved tips to help get you started.

18th Century Farmhouse – Puglia, Italy

Dating back to the 1800’s and set amongst the quiet Italian farms found in the Itria Valley in Puglia, Italy, Trullo del 1800 offers plenty of space for you and your furry friends. From the sumptuous outdoor courtyard to the wide-open fields and warm fireplace to relax by at the end of the day, this charming abode offers three-bedrooms and lots of room to roam. “Just make sure to bring your pet’s favorite bed to avoid any little accidents on the crisp white linen, and remember to give them something familiar and comforting that smell,” Dr. Kate Bruce said.

“Dogs require a little bit of calm and relaxation every now and then, just as much as humans do,” Dr. Bruce said. “This Moroccan beauty will let your dog rest on the cool tiles among the gentle shadows, or stretch their legs between the banana trees in the courtyard.”

Complete with an open terrace, ideal for lazy naps and soaking up some rays, both you and your dog will love this Unique Architecture Cave House in Oia, Greece. Dr. Bruce advises that you make sure to keep your pets well-hydrated here and make sure to pack plenty of water bowls as well as consider investing in some dog-safe sunscreen, especially if your pooch has lightly pigmented skin.

“This property offers a great spot to take a dip in the pool but be careful with first-time swimmers,” Dr. Bruce said. “All dogs should be supervised when swimming, and some of our less talented athletes may require a canine life jacket to help them enjoy the water safely.”

One of the ten most wish-listed homes on AirBnb, this gorgeous one-bedroom Waterfront Villa in Kotor, Montenegro serves up some of the best views over the Bay of Kotor while being pet-friendly to boot.

“While the Montenegran delicacies on offer at this stay may tickle your taste buds, be careful offering unfamiliar foods to your pets,” Dr. Bruce said. “It’s best to pack some of their tasty treats from home, and stick to their regular diet to avoid nasty stomach upsets on holiday.”
