A Medieval Monastery In Southern Sweden Is Ready For Its New Identity

Real Estate

The next chapter for a history rich property for sale in Sweden is awaiting its author.

Set in the southernmost part of the country, Herrevad Abbey is made up of two sites that can be purchased individually or together.

The properties house a number of buildings that can be used as private residences, rented out or developed for business purposes such as a high-class destination with hotel and restaurant operations, cultural events and sports and nature activities.

Founded in 1144 as a Cistercian monastery, the abbey later became a fiefdom. Then in 1658 the property was passed on to the Swedish crown and utilized as a residence for army officers.

A granary warehouse, barracks and stables were added in the early 1800s when the holding became a military headquarters for the region. Cavalry horses were bred and trained on site until the property became privately owned in 1994.

The castle is partly built on the remnants of the medieval monastery. Previous renovations have been removed to restore its original appearance. Vaults, ceramic tile made by the monks and some of the old limestone floors remain.

The two Renaissance-style wings were added in the 18th century and include a knight’s hall.

Among other structures on the property are a wedding chapel that was built from some of the monastery buildings and three old log houses, two of which are undergoing renovation and conversion into homes.

The granary, built of thick gray stone, has most recently been in use as a concert venue. The cavalry riding arena is being developed into an art museum.

The 7,000 square meters, or more than 75,000 square feet, of potential interior space includes 12 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms.

There is on-site fishing, kayaking and hiking. Nearby are an airfield, equestrian facilities and several golf courses.

By car, the abbey is about 1.5 hours from Copenhagen, 45 minutes from Malmö and 2 hours from Gothenburg.
