Medicaid Income Limits And Spending By State

Retirement

Medicaid spending is something that fluctuates fairly substantially from state to state. Medicaid income limits, too, vary by state, which can make it hard to know if you qualify depending on where you live. Here, we’ll breakdown Medicaid spending by state and Medicaid income limits by state.

Medicaid Limits by State

Many states actually have Medicaid income limits that are the same. Each Medicaid income limit depends on the size of your household. For example, in Alabama, if you have a household size of eight people, to be eligible for Medicaid, you must have an annual household income — before taxes — that is below $62,018. In other states, such as Hawaii for example, with a household of eight, you must have a maximum income of less than $71,342.

Some states have their own variations of Medicaid. For example, in Maine, its program is called MaineCare, and is a hybrid federal/state program. In Massachusetts, Medicaid is referred to as MassHealth. In Missouri, the state has a program called MO HealthNet that is akin to Medicaid — it even has the same Medicaid income limits of most other states; recently, in October 2021, Missouri residents voted for Medicaid expansion enrollment in their state.

The state with the highest Medicaid income limit is Alaska, where households of eight people must have a maximum income of less than $77,526. Alaska Medicaid income limits also include the highest limit for households of one person, $22,597.

Read on to find out all the Medicaid income limits by state. At the end of this list, you’ll also find average Medicaid spending by state in billions of dollars.
